Instructing your new driver? Watch their feet and you might get a surprise. Are they driving with both feet? One for the brake and the other for the gas? It happens. How about working the pedals off of a heel rotation. The heel should be on the floor and the top of the foot or toes are applying pressure to the pedals. This is where the smooth acceleration and braking occur. The fine control is from using the smaller muscles in the foot and ankle. It is common to see the new driver lifting the foot completely off the floor to switch pedals. This puts the large leg muscles into play with a result of jerky and abrupt application of force to the pedals. The driver will also notice leg fatigue after extended driving. Using the pedals more efficiently will also improve the very low speed driving in parking lots and also when inching up to see around obstructions when entering a road.
